Guide to all runestones
in Ekerö municipality

Who and why?

Created by me Kalle Runristare

The website is created for those of you who want to know more about runestones in Ekerö municipality in the first place, but also other runestones.

Now you should be able to easily find most of the described runestones and you should be able to study them even though they may be overgrown with lichen and lack color.

Can the pictures be trusted?

Yes absolutely!
The images have been colored digitally and with such great precision that they can be used scientifically.

The basis is mainly the older black and white photographs with original painting, they are the most reliable. (Later paintings in the field are often copies of these).

The work with images and information is also based on my own experiences as a runecarver and on practical investigations in the field where trailing lights have often been used with success.

Why are these images better than the original?
First of all, the motif becomes clearer with colors.

In addition, we know that most runestones had colors, but not exactly which colors and where on the stone... But that may not matter as each runestone should have been cleaned every 10-15 years and then given new colors according to availability, likes and wishes. In other words, each runestone has probably had several different colors over time.

Background and education?

Guide in the World Heritage Birka and Hovgården since 1998, has studied archeology and history for over 40 years and works actively as a contemporary runecarver since 1993.

My profession as a runecarver has been the most important and significant experience for being able to interpret and describe the runestones on the website.
