Histoy
In 1680 it is
mentioned and depicted by Hadorph and Leitz.
The top was already broken off and disappeared. The
ornamentation and runes on the edge of the runestone were
not noticed at the time. Instead, it was a happy surprise
when the runestone was rediscovered in 1981.
In 1850, the runestone was searched for by Dahlgren
but could not be found.
In 1950 it was mentioned as missing in the book
Uppland runic inscriptions.
In 1981, the runestone was searched for again, and
this time it was found lying in pieces in a stone quarry. It
was then repaired to the best of its ability and erected in
the place where it stands today.
It was farmer Gunnar Nilsson
at Törnby farm who rediscovered the runestone. He had been
looking for it for many years when he came up with the idea
of looking for it in a stone shard next to Törnby's old
church road about 800 m. north of the farm.
Under some larger stones he
found one with moss on it and when Gunnar removed the moss,
both runes and ornamentation were visible.
Gunnar soon found two more
larger rune-carved stone pieces and a few days later a
smaller stone fragment, then most of U 44 was found.
