Same information here as
under U 49
Both runestones are part of
the same monument and should have been given the same number
but they have unfortunately been placed on each side of the
church and given different ones, U 49 and U 50.
Therefore the starting
image is different but the information is the same,
copied between the pages.
Runic inscription
On U 49 it says:
SiR(?), Holmstein (and) Ketilfast laid(?)
+ siR + hulmstain + ketilfastr + laži
a '
On U 50 it says:
+ iuan · stretn + merki + ok
+ rahnuor + eftiri boanta +
*Joan scratched the mark and
the runes after farmer
*This is my interpretation but I am not a runologist, I am a
rune carver.
On the website Runor which always
tends to interpret runic inscriptions correctly, the
interpretation is different and for me quite difficult to
accept.
Jóhan the pugnacious(?) landmark; and
Ragnvor in memory of (her) husbandman.
The inscription on U 49 and U 50 together
reads roughly like
this:
SiR, Holmstain, Ketilfast lagdia Ivan
Streiten mark and Ragnvor after her husband.
+ siR + hulmstain +
ketilfastr + laži a ' + iuan · stretn + merki + ok + rahnuor
+ eftiri boanta +
About the runestones
The rune stones stand on each side of Lovö
church but belong together. They are two rune stones that
probably belong to each end of a grave, like a version of
the famous Eskilstuna coffins.
Both runestones are fragile red sandstone and
both have damage. Both need care and protection even if they
are anything but beautiful... or maybe just because of that?

I'm thinking...
There is something extra sad, wistful about
these runestones. Here someone has made an effort to make a
beautiful memorial for someone but lacks both technical
knowledge and artistic sense.
This work has taken a long time because the grooves are not
cut, only carved. Why was there no relative or good friend
who could give good advice or help?
It feels like the carver is very young, alone and desperate?
I see that the monument was so important for the runecarver
that even if the outcome was not good... he still completes
the runestone... and not just one but two.
They belong together!
Both runestones are damaged and need to be
repaired. Both should also be next to each other, not on
each side of the church.
It would be best if they got a place in the
future Ekerö museum!
