Ornamentation
Details such as the head, tail and neck
tassel do not follow the Uppland style and have been given
their own and somewhat unusual solutions.
One reason may be that the rune carver is not
from Uppland at all but from Södermanland, more specifically
Botkyrka where he had previously carved the runestone Sö 288
at Hågelby farm.
The ornamentation on the two runestones is
almost identical.

Here the leash between the dragon's neck and
tail is the dragon's own neck tassel. The leash must always
be braided correctly on a runestone, it must go up and down
every other time, never over, over or under, under.
On Sö 288 the braiding is wrong, there it
goes "under, under".
On U 30 the braiding is correct as it should be on
runestones.
This, but also some other small details, tell
me that it is the runestone Sö 288 that is the oldest... you
learn from your mistakes.
Which means that the runecarver probably
comes from Södermanland, Hågelby.

The size of the runestone is about 2 x 2
meters. It leans backwards and would probably need to be
straightened before it falls.

NOTE!
The runestone lacks any painting!
... but during the afternoon the sun can cast
shadows in the cutting marks, a shadow light effect.

The runestone was carefully cleaned a little
before 2015 to be painted by Runverket, but for some reason
it never happened.

The runestone stands in its original place
next to an ancient and partially lost road between Hilleshög
and Färingsö church and Hilleshög and Tingsplatsen with the
runestones U 37
and U 38.
Viking Age Graves
70 meters southeast of the runestone is a burial field with
6 visible graves. Two mounds and four round stone circles.
The mounds are 5-9 meters in diameter and up to 1.5 meters
high.
A well
20-25 meters SW of the runestone is an abandoned well. It is
round, about 1 meter in diameter and 2 meters deep, and has
stone walls.
Viking-era farm
All this together indicates that the runestone stands at a
crossroads at a Viking-era farm. A good place where many
people came by and could see the runestone and read the
runic inscription... today almost no one comes by here.
